I grew up in Brooklyn, Carroll Street, between Clinton & Court. Anyway, Manhattan Special was a staple for "us kids in the neighborhood". We'd go to Pete's Candy Store on Court & 1st Place, grab an ice cold Manhattan Special and a bag of Wise Potato Chips and ahhh, heaven. Nothing beat the two. I've taken the love of Manhattan Special and passed it along to my children and surprise, surprise, they are enjoying the ice cold delicacy. As a matter of fact, they enjoy even more than that pricey other bottled "coffee specialty"...I do remember at one point during my childhood that Manhattan Special was introduced in cans, glad you brought back the glass bottles when you did...Thanks for keeping my childhood memories alive and for creating new ones with my children.

I agree with everyone on the list! There is nothing like a Manhattan Special (no diet for me!) To all the friends I see on the list - it's great to see all of your names and statements and memories, incluyding drinking a nice cold one together. My dad (Angelo) actually worked there, and was on the MS bowling team! So of course, we drank it like water! Especially living on Jackson St! It's a little tougher to find in NJ, but I have and still drink it whenever I can!!!! Please stay in business!!

When I was a little girl, my father introduced me to Manhattan Special. He used to go to the Brooklyn bottling plant and buy cases upon cases of it to share with all the paisans. Everytime I drink it, the taste brings me back to a wonderful, simpler time in my life. Now I have passed the tradition onto my family.

FOR ALMOST 50 YEARS A COUPLE OF ICE COLD "MANHATTANS" ARE THE BEST DRINK THERE IS. JUST AS IMPORTANT ARE THE THOUGHTS THAT COME TO MIND, FROM THE PAST AND NOW. MY 1ST MANHATTAN AT MY AUNT MARY'S CANDY STORE ON HAVERMEYER AND N6TH ST. SHE HAD A BIG HEART. MY "UNCLE PETE" WHO LIVED ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE FACTORY ON MANHATTAN AVE LOVED THEM ICE COLD. MY UNCLE MARIO WHO WAS THE BEST TURK ON THE BOAT IN THE MOUNT CARMEL FEAST IN THE LATE 50'S EARLY 60'S. IN THE SIXTIES, WATCHING MY DAD PLAY LEFTFIELD AT THE "TENNIS COURTS" MCCARRAN PARK, "JIMMINEAL" FROM THE NORTHSIDE. THE BEST DRINK BRINGS BACK GREAT THOUGHTS OF MY UNCLE'S AND AUNT WHO ARE IN A BETTER PLACE NOW. THANK GOD, MY DAD IS STILL WITH ME, AND HE STILL HAS A BETTER ARM THAN A FEW OF THE YANKEE OUTFIELDERS, EVEN AT 80. ME AND MY 2 BROTHERS PETER AND VINCENT ENJOY "MANHATTANS" ICE COLD LIKE UNCLE PETE DID ALL THE TIME. "YEAH"

Our family has been drinking this soda since the 1920's or perhaps earlier. I recall the old yellow & white label/graphic (changed a few years back)with a man seated at a dinner table and a woman standing over him, I think she was pouring the soda for him...... This product is timeless and I am happy that it's taste has never changed, even if the label has. It is old New York.

I'm 62 now and I been drinking MS for a little over 50 years. My uncle had a small coffee shop in the old First Ward section of Newark. He had a soda cooler in front filled with ice. I remember the Nehi's and of course the MS which was my favorite then and now. Funny thing is, I don't like or drink regular hot coffee. I remember the old bottles with the red printing/paint on the bottle itself.

As a young girl, every week when we would visit grandma and granpa, the first thing my dad did when we walked in the house was open the fridge and grab 2 Manhattan Specials, one for him and one for my brother and I to split. Now, as an adult, the first thing I do when I travel from Florida to visit grandma is pop open a Manhattan special. We were in Williamsburg for Thanksgiving and we brought home a case.... Ah.... I grew up in soho, drank it there, moved to eny brooklyn, drank it there, am now in the bronx and buy/drink it every chance I get. When I lived in soho, a neighbor had in-laws in greenpoint, that was my first exposure to manhattan avenue, hence the manhattan special is named after the area is is bottled in, also i think the Passaro family is still the owner. they took the name off of the label, however. Keep up the good work, the drink is a classic and still delicious.

While growing up in Coney Island, my grandfather used to take me to the candy store where he would buy me a "soda" and he would have his "special Special". He would give me a sip and every once in a while I could talk him into buying me one too. Once I was old enough to cross the strret on my own I would cross to the candy store and buy my own. I still love them to this day but living near Albany they are hard to find. I especially like to pour some over vanilla ice cream......or to all a little additional flavoring (Tuaca). After all these years it still tastes the same......thanks for keeping up the quality. It is rare to find a company willing to do that these days.

Originally from Brooklyn (Park Slope area), now living in Florida... I went to a new pizzeria and found MS... It brought so many wonderful memories back to me that it brought tears to my eyes...I can't tell you what MS means to me... not only the taste of the drink, but the good times I shared with my family drinking one... on hot days, my mother would freeze them in ice cube trays and we would eat it frozen, like italian ices... Introducing it to my English husband for the first time... giving a 'sip' to my son... most of all, my dad buying me one everytime I went with him to 'The Club' ... it was either Crodino or MS... but MS was a bigger bottle and definitely tastier...!!! I hope to find a location close to me where I can buy it at a better price than the $3 a bottle they charge in this pizzeria... I buy it anyway as a treat, but would love to get it by the case!!! I love you guys!!!!

What wonderful memories come to people like me who loved your soda all their lives! It makes me smile to hear everyone's stories. I was born in Besonhurst Brooklyn, 8002 21st Avenue (I know it rhymes!). Since I was a kid, my tastes for what to snack on changed, but what to wash it down with was never in question when I saw the familiar little bottles lining the cooler. Even the sound of the bottles clinking together as you grab one from a group is familiar. I was a bit sad when I saw the labels change after all these years...maybe every year on your anniversary, you could bring back labels from the past, after all these years, I bet there's labels I've never seen. Thanks for the memories!

I grew up on Skillman Ave between Union & Lorimer. I could see the Manhattan Special plant from our windows on the third floor. We all grew up drinking "coffee soda", as we called it. There is no other flavor like it. I didn't even know this website existed until one of the "kids" I went to OLMC with sent it to me! It makes me glad to know that as things change all around us, one thing is constant: the inimitable "coffee soda" taste!!! Don't ever change it!

Dear M.S. - LOVE your drinks! My experience with your products began 6 years ago, while dating a nice fella named Tony. I made sure that in my conversations with him I managed to find out about all the things he really liked (so I could get them for him). One was his love for Manhattan Special. I checked out all the stores in my then neighborhood Bay Ridge, Bklyn, until I found your delicious coffee sodas. I stocked my refrigerator with them, so that whenever he visited me I could always offer him one. We were married a year later. Coincidence?? I THINK NOT! :-) Now we serve it at all out family parties and there's a whole new generation of M.S. fans. My inlaws want to know if you are going to start shipping it out to Indianna. Thanks for everything. Maryanne

I remember the days of my grandmother taking me to the I.L.A on court st in brooklyn then right after going to Ferdinand's pannele store on union st and getting my pannele special, rice ball, and Manhattan special. That combination is to die for and on a hot night it's so refreshing.I used to own a restaraunt and i sold it quite well. People were very curious as to what it was and once they tried it they were hooked even my wife. We just moved to south florida and i found it in Dorece's Italian Markets,I couldn't believe my eyes.

My cousins lived in the area of Skillman Avenue and Manhattan Avenue so this plant was a landmark for us. I ALWAYS loved the soda and cannot find it here in northern California where I now live. When visiting Brooklyn, I always stock up and have introduced my daughters to this great drink. I love visiting the old neighborhood. It brings back my most pleasant and joyful memories. I feel fortunate to have come from such a diversified and exciting area of Brooklyn. Every other week I buy it by the case from Jerry's Gourmet in Englewood, but unfortunately, they seem to be running out of their supply sooner of late; this time I've been waiting two entire weeks for my MS fix! I also grew up on 187th Street and Arthur Ave! It was the 50's and 60's. I remember Manhattan Specials being a special treat, even though my parents and grandparents would buy it for us at the drop of a hat, not as a reward or anything. It's hard to believe 5 year old kids drinking the equivelant of 10 espresso coffees in one shot, but what else could have fueled our all day long stickball and stoopball sessions. Ringolevio, Johnny on the Pony. We were always out. I moved to Ft. Lauderdale in 1989 and for 14 years the urge for a coffee soda never left. Imagine my joy, and horror, to find out there was a store less than a mile from my home that sold Manhattan Specials that whole time! My brother and I would clean out their stock every week, 3 large bottles every day for months. Yes, I noticed the heart palpitations from so much caffiene! I've since left Florida and am once again in Manhattan Special withdrawal. I've got a friend from Louisiana who's dying to try one just from what I've told him about them. Hopefully I'll find a local distributor soon here in Dixie.

You haven't really enjoyed a Special until you taste it "ON TAP" at Ferdinando's on Union Street, in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. Madon,it The best!! One of my fonder memories of summers when I was a child was drinking an ICE COLD SPECIAL while eating a sausage and pepper sandwich and a bag of zeppole at the "Mt. Carmel Feast"!! We didn't have to travel far for great memories! My family (from over 100 years ago!!) comes from Leonard and Withers Streets, just a few short blocks from the Manhattan Special factory. Everyone in my family has been drinking this GREAT drink (known simply as a "Special" in our house, as in "Philly, get the Special" or "Wanna Special?") since we were old enough to hold a glass. I now live on Long Island and while I can find my Special in stores (2 1/2 cases a week goes in my house) I can not find the other flavors. I guess I could stop on Meeker Ave at the beer distributor (Is BERLIN still there?) to find it, but Special has to be made more accessible in other places. While I want to keep "Special" to ourselves, like all great things, it must be shared with the world. JUST DON'T CHANGE THE RECIPE.

I moved to Seattle about 13 yrs ago I opened up an espresso stand I carry egg creams with u-bet syrup I order online and I am always talking about Manhattan special and how it's the original people here think they know coffee LOL. Well I have to say Starbucks has nothing on manhattan special and I will be getting some in to show people what the original is like. I even have to make my own cannoli and rainbow cookies because you can't get them here. Everytime I go home to Brooklyn to visit I gain 10 lbs. I love NY

I was first tried a Manhattan Special in 1981. I was told to try it by my wife whom was from Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. I at first did not want to try it as I was told it was " coffee soda " and being such a picky person, I said how could anything taste good that was a coffee soda ? Well here it is, 2007 almost, and I am still drinking it and now my oldest daughter Melissa, 18 is addicted to it. Nothing at all can come close to it !

I drink 5 manhattan specials a day... at night I make sure I have at least one in the house for morning - I hide them - LOL - because if I don't everyone else in the house drinks them... When we go away on vacation I pack one for each day. I am a flight attendant and when passengers see me drinking it - they are like "do you serve that? Can I have one?" and then proceed to tell me their family memories of the drink. While we were making our Christmas Eve plans (I am having everyone over) and determining who was making the fish salad and such, I found myself laughing when we got into the who is bringing the Manhattan Special... big bottles or cases of small... conversation...lol. It wouldn't be a 'celebration' without Manhattan Special!!! My only wish... please make the small bottles easier to open - I have a never healing wound on my middle finger from struggling with the caps :) Oh - and wouldn't it be great if you distributed to JFK - I have a contact for you if you are interested ") Happy Holidays!!!!!

I dont know what you put in your soda but thank you for taking my friend back to her teenage years..

We have been drinking Manhattan Special for 47 years. My Grandfather would bring it from Brooklyn to Connecticut as a treat. It's been a family favorite, especially at Christmas. I just bought 3 cases (purchased in Manchester,VT of all places) and gave two to my Mom (she was thrilled. Now my son (fourth generation to enjoy it!) is hooked. I am sure Manhattan Special will be in our family for years to come. Thanks

If there were any logic in the world of consumerism, Manhattan Special would be a household name and best selling beverage. Many more years for your great products and best wishes for commercial success.

I was born in Manhattan and when we moved to the lower East Side (now the East Village) in 1961 La Focacceria was one door down from us and I learned to give up my ham and cheese sandwich for a Vasteddi and a Manhattan Special. I lived on that meal for six years until we moved to Brooklyn. Every time I came into Manhattan I ate lunch there. I now live in NJ and have taken my son to NY to enjoy a Manhattan Special. He loves it as I still do. He even made me buy a few bottles to take back to Jersey and kept the empty bottles. How I miss it because we don't have it here.

I grew up with Manhattan Special & didn't realize HOW special it was until I moved down to D.C. & couldn't find it anymore. I finally found an Italian specialty store that sold it but then they went out of business. This stuff is not only fabulously delicious (and makes a great ice cream soda), but I have no doubt that it saved my life many times. Nothing kept me awake during back and forth trips between NY and Virginia like Manhattan Special, and I had to do a lot of them caring for elderly relatives. 2 Manhattan Specials were better than any amphetamine could be - if I'd had no sleep at all it'd take 4. This soda ROCKS.

As a young boy I lived in Brooklyn on “Withers Street” a few blocks away from the factory. Next door to me was a soda distributor in the early 1960's where my grandmother Sue would always get a few bottles to have around. I always managed to sneak a glass (since it has caffeine and I was not allowed to drink coffee). The taste was great and to this day I still love it. My cousin Peter D’Arienzo wrote in 1999, “I enjoy introducing it to my friends and neighbors. The only ones who do not appreciate it are my in- laws”. I had the same experience with my in- laws. I have since moved out of New York into State College, PA (Nittany Lion Country) and have managed to find an Italian Pork store that carries Manhattan Special. Thank you Jesus!!! They are refreshing at anytime of day, and are in a completely different standard than your average cola. I hope to keep MS as a drink that I can introduce to my own family in the future.

We sold MS in our Focacceria on Henry St (Pannelli, Arancine, Vasteddi & Cazzilli) starting in 1947 until my father retired in 1980. That's when I got addicted to it. We still stop in Brooklyn every Saturday for lunch at Ferdinando's Focacceria on Union St who has MS on tap! On our way back to Westchester we stock up at Beverage World in Greenpoint for ourselves, our son and daughter. Every time my wife and I share a bottle we invariably look at each other, smack our lips, and simultaneously say "The nectar of the Gods." Keep it coming, your product is a great Italian American tradition and icon.

Ten years later, I see your products now in most supermarkets in Queens and Long Island near where I live and work. I find adding cold milk to the Manhattan Special is a much tastier, refreshing, and inexpensive drink than what the coffee chains popping up all over the neighborhoods are offering. Yes going to Annunciation Catholic School and then on the way home crossing Metro Ave. and stopping at Lillies Candy store and getting a egg cream or splurging for Manhattan Special was the day, Then walk up Havemeyer St and you got home and you had the energy to go outside and hang with the girls and the guys...But the best was going to the McCarren Pool, and then taking the long walk up Roebling and stoping for the Manhattan Special bottle and oh did the walk feel great... I just posted a message and mentioned Galco's in Los Angeles. I then read some posts and saw that some of you want to have Manhattan Special shipped to you. Galco's ships Manhattan Special. It is not cheap, but it is worth it if you love MS as much as I do. www.sodapopstop.com

I am originally from Queens and I grew up with Manhattan special. It is difficult to find it in upstate New York - where I live now. I am currently in California on a contract and was estatic to find Manhattan Special at Galco's in Los Angeles. They don't have the iced coffee flavors - I would like to try those. They have all the sodas though. I sometimes add a little bit of milk to the coffee soda to make it fizz up and have a little different flavor. I think I am going to have to pop open a bottle now that I am just thinking of it.

I had the pleasure of drinking your Espresso Soda last Saturday, while on visit to Jimmy's Italian Food Market in Dallas, Texas. That has to be the best soda I have ever tasted and I would love to be able to buy some online, by the case! It was so refreshing and I love the fact that you use real coffee, not coffee flavor and honest to goodness sugar, not corn syrup. It makes all the difference and I can't wait to have another one.

I miss my MS. One of my earliest memories is going to the Half Moon in the Bronx for a slice and an MS with Grandma. Now its the Full Moon, but the last time I went back, no MS... I almost cried. I live in Southern Cal now and cant find it anywhere. There was a place in Little Italy in San Diego that used to have a sign up, but I think he took it down rather than have to tell me "No, I dont have any" every time I went in. LA is sadly lacking much in the way of an Italian section or even much good deli. I have heard about a place called Mario's in Glendale, but haven't had a chance to visit. I figure the longer I delay, the longer I can hope that I may walk in and find my beloved bottle (with the new look) waiting for me, my one and only... until then I depend on my brothers' shipments every couple of months, unless someone can point me to a local source...

Tried it for the first time this year! I live near Smith St and 2 St in Brooklyn, where two deli's carry the 10oz bottles. [Who's jealous?] Since I first brought it home, my apartment has consumed 2-6 bottles of it daily. Amazing taste for $1.50 apiece. I'll have to check out the bottling plant up in Williamsburg. One thought... the colored labels for the different flavors are not colorblind-unfriendly - the red and the green look identical, but red's for regular and green's for diet decaf... we have some unwanted bottles of diet decaf if anyone wants to come get them... heh... I've never seen the large bottles anywhere, either.

I'm sitting here in Fishkill, NY (Dutchess County) right now drinking Manhattan Special with my Pop (he's got the diet one). I've been drinking it as far back as I can remember. There's nothing like it in the world (and I've been around it). I now live in Los Angeles, CA and there's nowhere to get it. As a matter of fact, there's not even a Little Italy, or any kind of Italian area that I know of, in Los Angeles. I make it home once or twice a year and always try to make it down to Mulberry Street to pick some up. Anyone know where I can get it in Southern California? I can't wait to try the new flavors, but the original will always be close to my heart. Which is right above my belly. -Rocco

I don't remember a time when Manhattan Special was not on the table at a family gathering. My grandma would come over on her day off and bring ham and fresh mozzarella for sandwiches which we washed down with our esspresso sodas. I remember drinkin them at "way too young to have coffee" age and now my 6 year old daughter steals sips from my 4-5 bottles a day like i did from my mom....aaaaahhhhhhhh tradition.

Real hot dogs with peppers, onions, and potatoes...not boiled wienies with kraut(which I like, too). MMMM!!! I really don't drink soda much, but I love this coffee soda! Coca-Cola doesn't have anything on it! The only place in Houston I've seen it is at Spec's downtown, and every time I go, they only have one or two bottles left. Boo, hiss.
